Economics of Incorporated Towns

About the Towns Data

All incorporated towns and places in the United States are included in the five-year American Community Survey (ACS) estimates. All of the incorporated towns in Northern Virginia have a population of less than 65,000 persons, and one-year ACS estimates do not exist for incorporated places with a population of less than 65,000.  It is important to note that the ACS is based on a small sample of the population of a place.  The ACS estimates for small places such as Clifton, Dumfries, Hamilton, Haymarket, Hillsboro, Lovettsville, Middleburg, and Quantico can be unreliable if the margin of error error is large.  A town's margin of area for a data piece can be found by hovering over the town's data in a graph.

For comparative purposes, Northern Virginia counties and cities, Commonwealth of Virginia, and United States data are provided in the charts.

Median Household Income

The Median household income of the incorporated towns in Northern Virginia are shown in this graph.  Loudoun County is the number one ranked county (county equivalent) in the nation. The towns of Hillsboro, Vienna, and Clifton have estimated median households greater than Loudoun County.  No Northern Virginia County or City has a median household income below that of Virginia and the United States, but the town of Middleburg is below and has a statistically significant difference from Virginia.  Quantico and Dumfries are estimated to be below Virginia and the United States but those towns are not statistically different than Virginia and the United States based on the margins of error.

Economically Disadvantaged

While Northern Virginia is known for having communities with some of the highest median incomes in the United States, we must recognize that there are segments of the community in need of assistance that live in one of the most prosperous regions in the country.  For statistics on topics such as persons in poverty click on the following.
